All Cats Are Gray by Andre Norton

I spent the evening binging on James Tiptree, Jr, who is, I’ve decided, not a writer to binge on. Wonderful stories, but dark and often depressing. Breathtaking, suspenseful, and down.

So I took a break and read an Andre Norton story I’d been meaning to read. I have it in a weird collection put together by Forest J. Ackerman, but I think it’s better to read the story in Tales From High Hallack Volume One: The Collected Short Stories of Andre Norton.

Steena of the Spaceways and her cat Bat explore a ghost ship called Empress of Mars. The story’s memorable, but more important than that, it has that Norton sensawunder feel. I’m most likely using this one as my Norton story, although I still have a few of her sf pieces to read.

Kris, I love Tiptree, but agree she gets very dark. I loved ‘Tales of the Quintana Roo’, her collection of novellas or novelettes, I think, set on the Yucatan Peninsula. Awesome fantasy and not so dark as her earlier stuff. But the stories were all long.
